assan-berrag Assan Barrage and the Assan Conservation Reserve is an important migratory bird sanctuary located near Vikas Nagar town on the border between Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh around 45 km Southwest of Dehradun. It is located within a reservoir built at the confluence of the Asan and Yamuna rivers which offers an important habitat for the migratory birds, including endangered species. Limited facilities such as accommodation huts and a small restaurant are available together with the very basic interpretation of the bird life.Assan barrage  serves as a winter passage halt for trans-Himalayan migratory birds. These birds are spotted here on their way to southern India (October-November) and again on their way back (late February-March).It is recently declared as a Bird Sanctuary.It's a paradise for the Bird Watchers. The Assan Reservoir is a small man-made wetland of Approx. 4 SQ. K.M. area.The birds listed as globally endangered species in the IUCN . Though the area of the Assan Barrage is not very big but the abundance of Birds (Domestic and Migratory) makes it an ideal place for bird Watchers.Approximately 53 species are known to make a habitat there, 19 species are migratory from Eurasia The dam creates the Asan Reservoir, also called Dhalipur Lake. During winter months these 11 migratory species, namely Brahminy Duck, Pintail, Red Crested Pochard, Gadwall, Common Pochard, Mallard, Coot, Wigeon, Common Teal, Tufted Duck, Shoveller have the 90% composition in total water birds.May to September end offer just as exciting opportunities to see local migrants like Painted Stork, Open Billed Stork, Night Heron. A Group of 25- 40 Painted Storks can be seen in these months every year.
